Cuchara Mountain Park is searching for highly motivated and resilient individuals to join our essential Mountain Operations team as a Snowmaker. Our Snowmaking Technicians are the driving force behind our ski season, working tirelessly through cold nights and unpredictable weather to blanket our mountain with the highest quality snow. This physically demanding but immensely rewarding Outdoor Winter Job is perfect for those who thrive in a unique, non-traditional work environment and are dedicated to making the first chair possible.
Snow Production and Operation:
Safely set up, move, and operate various types of snowmaking equipment (fan guns, air/water guns) across challenging mountain terrain.
Constantly monitor weather conditions (wet bulb temperature, wind) and equipment output to ensure the production of high-quality, optimal snow.
Make precise adjustments to water and air flow at hydrants and guns.
Perform snow quality checks and communicate production status frequently via two-way radio to the Mountain Operations team.
Maintenance and Physical Labor:
Work is highly physical, involving repeatedly lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy snowmaking hoses and equipment (up to 50 lbs) across slippery, uneven surfaces.
Perform basic maintenance, light repairs, and troubleshooting on snow guns, hydrants, and valves in cold, dark, and often wet conditions.
Shovel, rake, and manage snow buildup around equipment to maintain safe and efficient operations.
Safety and Shift Work:
Adhere strictly to all safety protocols regarding high water pressure, high voltage, and working in proximity to moving snow cats.
Must be prepared to work overnight shifts (Graveyard Shift), weekends, and holidays, as the work is weather-dependent and requires flexibility.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Willingness and ability to work primarily during Night Shift Snowmaking hours when temperatures are ideal.
Strong physical fitness and ability to perform heavy, sustained physical labor outdoors in extreme cold, wind, and low visibility.
Valid driver's license.
Reliable transportation to and from the resort for irregular shift times.
Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
Prior Snowmaking Experience or experience with large industrial equipment, piping, or high-pressure systems.
Basic knowledge of skiing or snowboarding and mountain layout.
Experience operating snowmobiles, ATVs, or tracked vehicles.
